So What Is Kas Social All About?
Beer, Music & Art 𒁉  !

And...Why are we called Kas Social?

The short answer is that our name comes from the Sumerian word for beer - kaš. - 𒁉

(The long answer you'll find below under Ninkasi ↓)

A Tap Wall With 12 Rotating Lines
& Our Wall Of Beer

We only stock the absolute best independent British craft beer and cider. With 12 rotating craft tap lines and up to 500 types of beer and cider on our wall of beer, we will absolutely have something for everyone.

But why only British? And why only independent breweries?

Well there are a few good reasons:

1: We have excellent award winning, world class quality on our doorstep, so why look further?

2: We are a truly independent high street shop and we want to not only showcase but champion local independent breweries and businesses.

3: Buying local independent products boosts our economy which will lead to better social prospects for our community.

4: We care about the world and the impact we are leaving for future generations.Sourcing products locally helps reduce our carbon footprint whilst we work with community projects to further carbon offset (we aim to be carbon neutral).

5: Stocking from British breweries gives us, and you, the opportunity to know where your drink came from and the inspiration behind it. Enjoy tap takeovers, meet the brewer, learn the history and taste your future favourite beer.

Vinyl Nights

From vinyl nights and DJ sets to laid back afternoons. Music, beer and art all go hand in hand at Kas Social as we play anything pre 2000.

Why music from before the millennium? Because we want to reintroduce you to a long lost love, or acquaint you with the one that got away.

But don't forget we're called Kas Social for good reason and conversation is king. Music enhances our atmosphere but doesn't take over.

So let's use this chance to carry on getting social! Let us know via the link below what you want to hear, when you're discovering your new favourite craft beer.

Mural of Ninkasi & Our musical Art

Who is Ninkasi, and why do we have a mural of her on our walls?

Well our name comes from the Sumerian word for beer - kaš. - 𒁉

And the Sumerians of Mesopotamia brewed what is commonly believed to be the closest thing to modern day beer around 6000 years ago. They regarded beer as a drink from the gods, gifted to us to promote our health and happiness. The original brewers were all women, priestesses of the goddess Ninkasi, and brewing was a social task undertaken by them daily. Ninkasi wanted the beer brewed fresh for the best flavour and her priestesses would sing a hymn throughout the process to praise her (and to remember the instructions on how to brew the beer).

The craft of brewing eventually traveled to ancient Egypt and was spread throughout Europe by the Romans. As time passed brewing became more commercial with the process being taken over by men, leaving Ninkasi and her priestesses to become a forgotten part of history.

So we want to do our part in honouring this ancient long lost tradition and the forgotten women who were essential to the craft. We won't be brewing our own beer, but we are paying homage to Ninkasi and her priestesses by placing her, and her hymn on our walls to remember and give thanks to those miraculous women.

A reminder too that Kas Social is a space for inclusivity and equality to thrive in an industry where these fundamentals are still all too often forgotten.

A bit about us, and why we do what we do...

'"If you don't build your dream, someone will hire you to build theirs ... "

We are Gary and Lauren, a married couple who met ten years ago while working in a small bar. We always dreamt of one day having a business of our own and, as the years went by, our vision adapted and grew until eventually, we knew exactly what we wanted to create.

After both being made redundant in the pandemic we realised life is too short and precious so we had to do whatever we could to turn our shared dream into a reality. And create our little family business. Making a place that not only we, but our customers would love to visit and enjoy.

So welcome to Kas Social! A place that combines our passions and one that we hope will become a welcoming and vibrant hotspot for the community with the emphasis on social. One that brings great craft beer, music and art together. A place that prides itself on using British brewers, local products and one which supports and works with it’s fellow local businesses and is above all conscious about the footprint it leaves behind for future generations.
